My Name is Paula Bailey, I am an experienced UKCP Registered Psychotherapist who has worked in differing roles of NHS Mental Health practice for over 30 years.
My training in Family Therapy began in 2007 and ended in 2011 during training I worked in the NHS North West CAMH Services and Eating Disorder Services. For the next 10 years I worked as a Family Therapist in the NHS Early Intervention Psychosis Services.
My private psychotherapy practice has been running for the last 3+ years. I have had the privilege of working with a great many clients throughout this time.
As a psychotherapist in Widnes, I offer individual, couple and family systemic psychotherapy that adapts to your unique experiences and circumstances. Individual therapy provides a personal space to explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, while also considering how your wider social systems, such as family, friends, and other influences may impact your well-being. Whether you're dealing with trauma, anxiety, or personal conflicts, I can help you identify your strengths, set goals, and work toward a healthier, more balanced life.
About Therapy
Life can be really challenging, and at times our problems and difficulties can feel overwhelming to us.
Sometimes we can find it difficult to make sense out of the situations we are in and the feelings we may be experiencing. Or we may need some additional support in dealing with difficult and painful circumstances.
As a Psychotherapist my role is to offer you a compassionate and safe therapeutic space for you to explore some of these difficulties and challenges, at a pace and in a style that works for you. I provide a non-judgemental, supportive environment where we can work together to overcome these challenges. I aim to empower you to develop new coping strategies, build resilience, and foster personal growth.

I believe that therapy should be flexible and individual to you. Whether you prefer in-person sessions or online therapy via Microsoft Teams, we can work together in a way that suits your lifestyle and comfort level. Each session is designed to move at a pace that feels right for you, allowing us to address your concerns in a safe and supportive space.

Individual Therapy
Systemic psychotherapy for individuals focuses on your personal experiences while also taking into account the broader systems that shape your life. This approach recognises that the difficulties we face are often influenced by factors beyond ourselves, including family dynamics and societal pressures. By exploring these connections, individual therapy can help you gain insight into how past and present relationships affect your mental health and well-being.
If you're struggling with:
-
Mental health issues: Anxiety, depression, trauma, or other emotional difficulties.
-
Life transitions: Coping with significant changes like job loss, bereavement, or divorce.
-
Relationship problems: Struggling to communicate effectively or maintain healthy connections.
-
Self-esteem issues: Feeling insecure or lacking confidence.
Individual therapy can provide a safe and supportive space to explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, and develop strategies for coping with challenges and achieving your goals.
Family Therapy helps people in close relationship help each other. It enables family members, couples and others who care about each other to express and explore thoughts and emotions safely. This can help you to understand each other’s experiences and views, appreciate each other’s needs, build on strengths and make useful changes in your relationships and your lives.
Individuals also can find Family Therapy helpful, as an opportunity to reflect and strengthen important relationships.
Family Psychotherapy
As an experienced Systemic Family Psychotherapist I offer a therapeutic approach that focusses on the interconnectedness of individuals within a family system. It provides a safe and supportive space for family members to explore their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, and to gain a deeper understanding of how these factors influence their relationships. By working with the family unit, I help you better understand each other’s perspectives, appreciate individual needs, and create meaningful changes in your relationships.
Couples Therapy
Couples therapy focuses on interactions within intimate relationships. Together we would consider a number of factors that may be impacting on your relationship, including: personal and relationship history, current dynamics, patterns of communication, attachment pattern, stress and distress, feeling stuck, issues of trust... and more.
My role is not to take sides, but to facilitate open, honest discussions that help you both understand your individual needs and those of your partner.
During therapy, we might explore areas such as:
How past experiences are shaping current behaviour and responses.
Identifying patterns in your communication that may be contributing to conflict.
Developing strategies to handle disagreements more constructively.
Building trust, empathy, and emotional resilience within your relationship.
By focusing on both individual and shared goals, we work together to find ways to restore balance, respect, and affection.

Couples therapy can benefit relationships at any stage...
You might be seeking support for long-standing issues, or perhaps you’ve encountered a recent challenge that's proving difficult to overcome. Here are some situations where couples therapy may be especially helpful:
-
Communication breakdown: Struggling to talk openly or feeling like your conversations always lead to conflict.
-
Trust issues: Working through betrayal, jealousy, or past incidents that continue to affect the present relationship.
-
Feeling stuck: When you and your partner find yourselves repeating the same arguments or unable to move forward.
-
Life transitions: Adjusting to significant changes such as moving in together, starting a family, or coping with job-related stress.
-
Intimacy concerns: Dealing with a loss of emotional or physical connection, or differing levels of desire.
If any of these resonate with you, couples therapy can provide a fresh perspective and practical tools to navigate these challenges.
Family Therapy helps people in close relationship help each other. It enables family members, couples and others who care about each other to express and explore thoughts and emotions safely. This can help you to understand each other’s experiences and views, appreciate each other’s needs, build on strengths and make useful changes in your relationships and your lives.
